Peel football club was the setting for our latest venture.
With Barnsley football club our guests for the weekend
and a music festival to stage too we were set for a very
busy day, fortunately one that will not be forgotten for a
long time.
Once again we were blessed with glorious weather. The
kids kicked off the day with a under 9’s football
tournament for the now annual Tommy Clucas trophy.
The script couldn’t have been written any better and the
eventual winners were Peel ‘A’ team who beat Marown in
the final 2-1. Some cracking football was played by all
the teams involved and it was great to see that the future
of local football is looking very bright.
By the time the kid’s had finished the tournament the
ground was all set up and ready for the arrival of our
footballing guests and local supporters. The auction tent
was safe in the hands of Ange who did a fantastic job
sorting and managing the items of interest we had on
offer to the highest bid. Along side the 25ft tent was
Martin Bullocks racing camper home. With the orning
down and 2 race bikes on display Anne took charge in
selling tombola tickets and merchandise. The football
girls donned their pinny’s and sold burgers during the day
and with the ladies football committee serving from the
canteen from the crack of dawn we offered refreshments
all day and night.
The match was supposed to kick off at 2 o clock, but due
to heavy crowd congestion at the gate we had to delay it
by 10 minutes to get everyone in!! Over 1000 people
turned up to watch Peel pit their wits against the newly
promoted championship side. With Barnsley bringing
their entire squad of 27 players over it was decided to
play 3 games of 30 minutes. With the two teams staring
with their strongest teams Peel battled their way to a 1-0
win in the first game, Kerron Christian rounding the
Barnsley keeper and scoring the goal to the delight of the
home crowd. With many changes being made to both
teams as the match progressed and the energy zapping
sun beating down, the final aggregate score line of 4-1 to
Barnsley was an unfair reflection to a highly competitive
match. Peel could hold their heads high at the final
whistle as they had more than held their own for over 70
minutes against their professional opponents. New
friends had been made, now we had the task of
entertaining the crowd in a different way….bring on
PEELSTOCK!
The stage had been erected of the grandstand by
Horizon scaffolding during the week. The lighting
equipment had also already been set up by E.L.S
lighting. The sound system was ready to go soon after
the football was finished and the bands were chomping
at the bit to get up and perform to the setting sun in the
sky and the 800 crowd plus sitting on the pitch, chilling
out and enjoying the superb surroundings. We realised
that we had pulled of another successful event as people
once again came up to support the charity from all over
the island. 5 bands played in to the night as we were
treated to music ranging from seventies to modern rock.
People dancing and singing is great, it’s even better
when families and kids are able to join in too. It’s fair to
say that Peel stock II will have to be organised …now
that we are professional festival organisers!
To round things of nicely to say the least, Jon Dalgliesh
won the Real Madrid signed shirt in the tom bola. Jon
very generously put the shirt back in to the fund. This
kind of generosity sums up the support that we are
receiving of people towards our goal. Hazel Hannan MHK
has bid £500 for the item and we have accepted the offer
and once again want to thank them both for their support
and kindness.
The auction came to a close as the night went on. Over
£2500 was raised from the items donated to the fund
from the football clubs in the premiership and coca cola
championship leagues. Squeek did an incredible job
accumulating the items and we can only take our hats of
to the work he put in in preparation to the day.
The list of sponsors and people who all helped us to
have a big day out at Douglas Road is endless. A
massive big thank you to everyone who helped on the
day, without all the players and locals who chipped in
and did a bit the grand total of £10,000 would not have
raised or been possible. Give yourselves a massive pat
on the back and prepare yourselves to be asked again as
you were so good! We have now raised over £30,00 in
less than a year, just shows what is possible when
people all pull together for a good cause and idea.
Thanks to everyone who came up for a skeet and we
look forward to seeing everyone again at our forth
coming family fun day at Peels ground on Sunday 27th
August. Sunshine and the same turnout would round of
an amazing 12 months quite nicely thank you.
